Buenos Aires
(A student`s poem written in class)

Yes, I saw
‘your huddled masses’
that call you home
but stare at the murky river
longing for a world long gone.

Si, vi
‘tus hacinadas masas’
que se sienten como en casa
pero estan contemplando el río turbio,
anhelando un mundo ido.

I came across
your well hidden pearls
sometimes disdainfully
trodden in the mud
by the careless.

Descubrí
tus perlas bien escondidas,
a veces desdeñosamente
pisoteadas en el barro
por los negligentes.

I looked up at the trees
and down at the cobblestones:
only they remember
your glorious past…
Yes, I have seen you.

Miré hacia arriba, hacia los grandes árboles,
y abajo, hacia los adoquines:
solo ellos recuerdan
tu pasado glorioso …
Sí, te he visto.
